This course examines the changing world of museums, galleries and heritage sites and organisations; students explore current theoretical and practical debates within the broadly defined world of the 21st-Century museum; through close study of the development of museum practice and theory, practical museum work, and the construction and curation of collections of varying kinds, the course equips students with a broad range of skills related to the rapidly developing area of museology and to future employment and/or study in the field; students develop a range of skills applicable to the field of museum studies and build an awareness of key issues in the developing field of museology, examining in detail such issues as: the changing status and function of museums; the technology of curating and display; museum and collections management; historical construction and representation within museums; museums and the construction/reflection of historical and cultural identities; changing audience construction and expectations; cultural symbolism and museums; students engage with issues on a theoretical and practical level through a range of structured project work as well as through lectures, seminars and tutorials.
