This course is taught by the 3 departments of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and probability and statistics; dual Honours students take core mathematics and some of the same modules as the single Honours students, and spend roughly half of their time in the school of mathematics and statistics; the courses in applied mathematics and probability and statistics do not assume prior knowledge of these subjects; the 1st year of this course consists of 4 units of core mathematics, 2 units of pure mathematics, and 3 units each of applied mathematics and probability/ statistics; most students take all of these, although there is limited scope for replacing a few of them by non-mathematical units; in subsequent years there is choice and the possibility of specialisation in 1 or 2 areas of mathematics; in the 4th year there is a major project as well as some more conventional lecture courses.PhilosophyThe programme offers a range of courses taught by researchers who are experts in their fields; students can develop their understanding of the key areas of philosophy such as ethics, philosophy of mind, theory of knowledge, political philosophy, metaphysics and logic through the course of your 3 years; there are also modules on major figures in the history of philosophy such as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hegel and others.
