German students benefit from a dynamic, contemporary approach to the study of the German language, using our excellent facilities students become familiar with key aspects of modern day German culture, society, politics, economics and literature; students have the choice of entering at beginners, intermediate or advanced levels; from the multiculturalism debate to the international terrorism, religion continues to have a huge influence on human behaviour across the globe and understanding the role religion plays is a vital part of understanding society at a local, national and international level; this relevant, contemporary course introduces you to all the world’s major religions and some of the less well known ones; study areas include Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism, providing a solid grounding for further professional study. German Year 1: This could be an introduction to European literature, to language studies, or to linguistics; alternatively, students can choose to study key themes in 19th century European history. Year 2: Students may opt to study censorship or concepts of realism in European literature, semantics, or the impact of the European Union on the social, political and economic development of Europe; they may even wish to expand their studies by exploring Swedish language, culture and society, or investigate the constraints on language variation imposed by social context and stylistic choices. Year 3: Students can study Fascism in Europe, issues of multiculturalism in Germany and Austria, or questions of identity in European literature; an exploration of words and their structure, or a German studies project are further options. Religious Studies Year 1: Provides a general introduction to the study of religion; it focuses on Judaism, and on religions in Wolverhampton; it offers social, political and ideological perspectives of the Holocaust, and investigates the development of the bureaucratic and technological apparatus of extermination. Year 2: Focuses on Christianity, Hinduism and Sikhism; it examines religion and the professions, and investigates what we have inherited from the Enlightenment and its key thinkers; it also introduces a range of research methods that are used in religious studies. Year 3: Explores Buddhism; it considers the religious landscape of contemporary Britain, as well as the ideas and practices which are important for contemporary Muslim identity in Britain; it also examines new religious movements which have emerged in the UK in recent times.
