Level 2: Core: 2 or more from the following: development of the English novel; history of English in Britain; poetic genre; language issues; literary theory; 4 options from creative writing; communication for professional purposes; European realist novel; elements of European drama; techniques of persuasion; drama from Shakespeare to the Restoration; modern American drama; 20th-century American fiction; theatre studies. Level 3: English studies project; 2 options from: post-war British drama; English in the World; post-Colonial fiction; pre-war British fiction; computers and texts; Elizabethan and metaphysical poetry; post-war British fiction; independent study unit; 20th-century poetry; modernism and postmodernism; models of English sentence structure. Additional units may be taken from the Level 2 list. This subject can also be studied within the degree programmes: BA/BA (Hons)/BSc/BSc (Hons)/LLB/LLB (Hons) in Deferred Specialist/Joint Degree (two subject entry).

This course explores the principal genres and forms of literature in English, including Renaissance literature, 19th-century literature, science fiction and contemporary literature, with opportunities to specialise; the course also has major modules in American literature and postcolonial literatures, allowing for a focused study in these areas within the context of English literature as a whole.
