Acquiring a high standard of oral and written fluency is central to all levels of the course; at level 1 the programme introduces students to French society and culture from the medieval period to the present day, including film studies, and to modern French history and institutions; further specialist options in these areas are taught at level 2; at level 3 students spend the whole year in France, usually either as a language assistant in a school or studying at university; places are also available at the University of London Institute in Paris in association with the renowned Institut d'Etudes Politiques, final year students spend approximately 5 months at a French university; work placements are available in the Lille-Roubaix area, where students can follow courses leading to the Certificat Pratique de Français Commercial et Economique, combined with a work placement in a local company. Economics: The Economics part of the course gives students a solid grounding in modern economic theory, incorporating the issues underlying current debates on economic policy, and the quantitative and analytical skills essential for economists; the economics modules equips students with the intellectual curiosity and academic skills to understand the world in which we live and develop a range of general transferable skills including communication skills, presentation skills, time management, information technology (IT) skills, and information-gathering skills; modules at levels 1 and 2 include economic analysis and policy, mathematical methods for economics, statistical methods, microeconomic principles; at level 3 students choose from a range of optional modules in economics.
