Operations managers coach their employees and companies on how to carry out their responsibilities with maximum speed and efficiency. Operations management (OM) involves the design, operation, control and improvement of the systems that are responsible for the productive use of raw materials, human resources, equipment and facilities in the creation of a product or a service. Operations managers make decisions about which product to produce, how many employees are needed and product quality specifications. The application of computers and information technology is becoming an important part of OM. UT, recognized as being one of the most wired for computers in the nation, understands this need. Students learn how to use the latest planning software in designing products, directing operations of the equipment used during product creation, gathering information about the manufacturing process, tracking the status of the inventory and distributing the finished goods. Further, students can gain real-world experience through numerous internship opportunities that often lead to full-time positions.
