Level 1: Multi-disciplinary; students develop skills and ideas in embroidery, knit, print and weave; design fundamentals are introduced; practical and technical work (including computer-aided design) is underpinned with a solid understanding of contemporary design with references to culture, market and careers. Level 2: Students develop understanding of chosen textile specialism by studying aspects of technology, commerce, innovation and design culture; they are encouraged to use skills in an innovative, personal way to produce original designs; theoretical studies cover broader issues within fashion and textiles including buying. Level 3: Students negotiate design projects with the aim of producing a portfolio of designs that demonstrate both personal strengths and understanding of cultural contexts within the design worlds; practical work is underpinned by a dissertation on a design or visual culture topic; throughout the course a live approach to projects is encouraged with students regularly working closely with external companies and entering design competitions.
