Applied geology and mineralogy expertise includes: The geological formation and evaluation of mineral resources (including industrial minerals, precious metals and diamonds); environmental mineralogy and geochemistry; geostatistics; applied sedimentology; structural geology; and regional geological research. Key current research areas are in: platinum group mineralisation in magmatic systems; granite-related mineralisation; the application of advanced automated scanning electron microscopy in the earth and environmental sciences; forensic geoscience; and environmental mineralogy; mining and minerals engineering research group: key research areas in mining include: the application of acoustic emission studies in geomechanics; numerical modelling applied to mining and civil engineering; landslide mechanisms and monitoring; ground behaviour in underground coal and metal mines; the application of neural networks in rock engineering; and blasting technology; health and safety, particularly related to the mining and quarrying industry; minerals engineering includes work on fine grinding of industrial minerals and processing of complex ores; and the application of automated ore sorting technology; the transfer of mineral processing technology in recycling; and the development of novel materials from recycled products.
