Spanish Year 1: This year includes a study of contemporary France or Germany and Spain; students could also take a further module from: film studies, linguistics, business studies and information technology. Year 2: Modules may be: Catalan language, culture and society; the Spanish civil war; comparative European literature; linguistics; or research methods. Year 3: Students can take: language in translation; questions of identity in European literature; words and their structure; culture and identity in contemporary Spain; dependency and development in Latin America; or undertake a Spanish studies project. English Language Year 1: Students get to grips with how the English language actually works and how it developed from its roots to the way it is spoken today; students are also introduced to the theory and practice of writing; in addition, they can choose between studying cultural studies, the linguistic features of English and its grammar and sounds, or writing effectively in greater depth. Year 2: Students can choose from a wide range of module options; they can explore different varieties of English as they are used in the world today; students can discover how different texts are produced: news articles, journalism features, travel writing, humour writing and TV programmes, for example; students gain an understanding of the features of the English language and see how they underpin meaning and are used, creatively or unconsciously, to create regional or national identities, and to create different types of text; in some modules students also carry out mini research projects, collecting and analysing linguistic data; as an elective option, they can choose to do a module with a work based element: either volunteering in action or the tutoring scheme. Year 3: Students can study more about the structures and varieties of the English language and how the mind makes sense of language; students can also explore the ways people use language to construct identities, how people talk in real life situations, how they use language to be funny, or whether men and women really do talk and act differently; finally, students can choose to do an independent research project on a topic of their own choice.
