Year 1: 2 compulsory modules: combustion science; fire scene investigation and documentation; year 2: compulsory module in electricity and fire; 1 option from: fire-related analytical methods, or explosions and explosives; 2 options from: research methods; people; fire and the law; explosions and explosives; research methods is compulsory for students wishing to progress to the MSc; year 3 (MSc stage): research project.

All applicants are dealt with on an individual basis; candidates are required to demonstrate to the University’s satisfaction that: they have reached a level of competence equal to that of a Bachelor's degree, either by possession of such a degree or by alternate means (contact the Postgraduate Tutor for further information); in addition, the following entry requirements are applicable for scenes of crime officers, that they have attended the initial scenes of crime course and attended the development scenes of crime course or 2 or more years’ experience as a SOCO; Fire Brigade fire investigation officers and forensic scientists, that have 2 or more years dedicated fire investigation experience or 5 or more years experience investigating fires as a part-time duty; application may be considered by provision of a portfolio of fire cases where the applicant is the lead investigator, followed by an interview at the University; the university will require submission of appropriate documentary evidence (e.g. employment and/or training records, continued professional development certificates, portfolio of investigations etc) before any particular application is considered; though not a formal admission requirement, students should note that the University would normally expect students to have access to moderately capable computer equipment, to have some access to the internet and to be contactable by email; in particular it is expected that some modules will only be delivered by interactive, digital methods; contact the Postgraduate Tutor for further details.

Course meets the needs of operational Fire Brigade Fire Investigation Officers, Scenes of Crime Officers and Forensic Scientists in respect to both scene-going activities (theory and practice), and ongoing professional certification; programme designed in consultation with industry leaders in fire science, fire investigation training and practical fire investigation, with consultation across other fields to encompass all the multi-disciplinary field aspects of fire investigation.
