The main research areas are: In-vitro electrophysiology of convulsive activity: presynaptic mechanisms of drug action; cellular and synaptic physiological studies on neurons of the basal ganglia; in-vitro electrophysiology and confocal imaging of neuronal-glial cell interactions; neurobiology and pharmacological interventions in anxiety disorders; structure and function of ligand gated ion channels; molecular pharmacology of neuropeptide receptors with particular reference to CGRP; signal transduction mechanisms in septic/diabetic vasculopathy and neuropathy; neurohormone and neurotransmitter control of hormone secretion by human pituitary tumours; development of novel methods for the production of membrane proteins for use in structural analysis and drug discovery Combinational biology – gene randomisation, protein library design and deconvolution.

As a guide, the entry requirement for PhD study is normally at least an upper 2nd class Honours Degree or equivalent from an overseas university.

The aim of the group is to explore novel means of therapeutic intervention in areas which produce significant population morbidity; primary areas of research interests include anxiety disorders, epilepsy, disorders of movement especially Parkinson’s disease, neuronal-glial cell interactions, neuropeptide receptors/hormones and signal transduction mechanisms in health and disease and structural membrane biology.

Расположение

Академгородок университета Астон уникально расположен в самом центре Бирмингема и при этом представляет собой более 20 га утопающего в зелени и огороженного от городской суеты пространства.
