Year 1: Provides a foundation for students to work confidently with women within a specific and limited context; topic areas include antenatal; intrapartum and postpartum care; lifelong learning skills are developed through the portfolio unit. Year 2: Continues the development of midwifery practice increasing the students’ competence and confidence; promoting women’s health and the organisation and management of women-centred care are central themes along with pathophysiology. Year 3: The outcome of this final year is the proficient and accountable midwife; the students will be able to demonstrate their ability to work with women in numerous contexts; the centrality of normality is the major focus complemented by childbirth and risk.

The course offers students the opportunity to become proficient and reflective practitioners of midwifery basing their practice on research; holistic care and commitment to lifelong learning; theoryand practice are integrated throughout; students who choose their teaching base in Bournemouth have placements covering Dorchester, Poole, Bournemouth, Salisbury and Yeovil; for those students whose teaching base is at the branch campus in Portsmouth, placements are in Portsmouth, Basingstoke or the Isle of Wight.
