Early childhood studies Contemporary study of early childhood invites a re-consideration of what it means to be a child, a parent, a carer and a human being; on the course the student asks some challenging and fascinating questions: what is play and what purpose does it serve? what kind of care ought children be entitled to? if children have rights, do they have responsibilities? what does social policy have to do with young children? at what age is it possible to identify children as having special educational needs? as well as asking these questions the student is expected to collect data on current provision for young children. English language Level 1: Introduction to texts; English in the modern world; English language and culture 1* (for non-native speakers of English only, who may take this and introduction to texts). Level 2: intercultural communication and introduction to Teacher(s) of English to Speakers of Other Languages; words in context: lexicology, styles and genres; English language and culture 2* (for non-native speakers of English only, who may take this and one of the other two modules). Level 3 (students choose 2 modules, modules offered may vary from year to year): English language project*; critical text analysis; language in use: personal and social identity*; teaching English to speakers of other languages (Teacher(s) of English to Speakers of Other Languages); the cultural history of the English language; language and the comic. *subject to validation 2008.

This is a joint Honours programme which enables the student to combine 2 subjects on an equal basis, giving the student a sound perspective on both subjects, with a good choice of option modules; early childhood studies considers and examines human development from ages 0-7 including major learning theories, the development and implementation of social policy and ways children are represented in different cultures; a significant theme is the debate around children’s right; English language course takes a close look at the development of English as a global language, at the prospects for its future, and at cultural aspects of communication; the student also examines the structure of the language and at the way it is used to varying effects in different texts; in addition, the student has the opportunity to learn how to teach English to speakers of other languages; there is also a pathway for this course which has been specifically developed for non-native speakers of English; this aims to improve and further develop existing English language skills to an extremely high level which would be necessary to function successfully in the global workplace.
