Year 2: Level 2 introduces students to the wider experience of professional illustration practice and its inherent demands; at the core of this is an exploration of the relationship between words and images; students experience the problems and delights of sequential story telling and the exposition of complex ideas in single images; students are encouraged at all times to reflect on their personal practice and to understand the sources that drive and inform it; students can also explore the notion of illustration in less conventional circumstances; exploiting their abilities on different stages; option modules at level 2 include a work experience module; the chance to take part in an exchange with European students through the Socrates-Erasmus programme and the chance to study animation. Year 3: At this level students take responsibility for their own creative progress through a programme of student-led self-directed study; students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of professional and technical ability; and begin to exercise career and professional choices; the study concludes with business studies and freelance seminars led, where possible, by practising illustrators who advise students in the selection and presentation of a professional folio of work; students undertake a special study which entails researching; collecting and organising material for an extended illustrated essay.

This course is aimed at students with high levels of drawing ability and an interest in narrative; at the core of the programme are the parallel pursuits of understanding and developing visual language and refining technique; through experimentation; exploration and continual practice students are encouraged to develop their own individual style, methods and look; outcomes are as diverse as the imagination of the student; cultural and theoretical studies broaden students awareness of the tradition of illustration and encourage analysis and critical enquiry while visits from respected practitioners aim to keep students informed about contemporary illustration practice.
