Short-listing for interview is undertaken with NHS Trusts and is based on a 2,000 word essay; students who are short-listed are jointly interviewed by the Community Nurse Mangers and by members of the Community Academic team from the University; applicants must demonstrate their ability in the following criteria for successful selection: an understanding of community public health nursing; an awareness of the pathway specific practice; ability to study at HE level 3; the interview is in 2 parts; there is a group exercise and an individual interview that may include a presentation.

This programme is for nurses and midwives registered with the NMC on the appropriate part of the register and who hold a health related 1st degree; the specialist community public health nursing programme is currently offered in both school nursing and health visiting pathways; on successful completion of the programme students are eligible for entry to part 3 of the NMC Register for specialist community public health nurses.
