*Four years of mathematics should include at least algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytic geometry and pre-calculus, though we prefer that students have calculus. Carnegie Mellon requires TOEFL scores of 102 or better on the internet-based TOEFL (as of Fall 2010) or an IELTS score of 7.5 and above. Carnegie Mellon carefully reviews the sub-scores of each of these exams and considers those candidates with reading, listening, speaking and writing sub-scores of 25 or more on TOEFL and 7.5 or more on IELTS to be candidates with high levels of English proficiency. Carnegie Mellon requires either the SAT Reasoning Test, the new SAT Test, or the ACT Test from every applicant.

The undergraduate curriculum is at once traditional, stable, but flexible enough to accommodate built-in double majors, specialties, and minors. The curriculum emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge in basic science and mathematics during the first three semesters, acquisition and exercise of knowledge about engineering science in the next three semesters, and acquisition of knowledge and experience with chemical engineering design in the final two semesters. Moreover, lab courses emphasize projects where students work on innovative ideas and decide what equipment to build or use in order to carry out those ideas. The objectives of the department are that graduates will obtain employment or attend graduate school, will advance in their chosen careers, and will be productive and fulfilled professionals throughout their careers.
