The Masters in Applied Second Language Acquisition is a one-year, intensive program preparing U.S. and international students for careers in second language teaching in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Graduates of the M.A. in Applied Second Language Acquisition program will be eligible for employment at universities, at private schools or public (alternative-certification) secondary schools, and (especially in ESL) in a multitude of settings abroad. The program will include observation of experienced teachers, involvement in classroom instruction, and finally primary responsibility for the planning and delivery of an extended period of undergraduate instruction in the student’s language of specialization. Students who are undertaking this degree in a second language with moderate insufficiencies in that language should anticipate taking part in an immersion program the summer prior to their arrival on campus.

But if you’re looking to go beyond the nearby vicinity and have mapped out a plan to see more than the obvious, your Carnegie Mellon student ID will double as your bus pass throughout Allegheny County – including the Pittsburgh International Airport.
