Year 1: Elements of the 1st year are common to the courses in architectural stone carving and ornamental wood carving; these include: wood carving; study of ornament forms and letter forms; gilding; stone carving; letter carving; casting; students also study life, plant and archaeological drawing; history of art and architecture; heraldry; science and conservation ethics; wood and stone technology. Years 2 and 3: Task skills and management; contingency planning; the significance of conservation and restoration work; responsibilities of the practitioner; preventive conservation; collections management; chemistry; the behaviour and deterioration of materials; historical and social backgrounds; research project.

This course provides students with the skills, such as drawing and carving, which are essential in developing the aesthetic awareness necessary for the informed practice of conservation; the course integrates these with the technical skills and theoretical knowledge required for the preservation and reinstatement of works of art.
