The programme aims to generate in-depth knowledge and understanding of what constitutes security in the 21st century, the role of international, national and non-state organisations in guaranteeing security and the place, relevance and limitations of military forces in helping to solve its multi-dimensional problems; this course is suitable for military officers, members of international organisations (including UN agencies and non-governmental organisations), diplomats, civil servants, police, academics, journalists, politicians, and others who need the capacity to analyse the complex interactions linking contemporary security issues and roles, or those seeking to move into these areas; each module represents 100 learning hours, of which 80 are completed at distance using printed and electronic material; all modules last 10 weeks and require 8 hours per week distance learning effort; the remaining 20 hours take the form of seminars and student presentations during 3 days at 1 of the residential schools run twice annually; it is envisaged that students should be able to complete 4 modules a year, but the degree is highly flexible in order to enable students to respond to professional or operational commitments.
