Education studies The education modules the student may study include: learning and teaching; history of education and educational policy; the context of education; education in a post-industrial society; knowledge and the curriculum; political sociology; the social construction of childhood; research methodology; whilst some of the modules are compulsory, others are optional, thus allowing the student to build the degree that suits them; in the 2nd year of the course the student has the opportunity to select the special placement option; this work placement, at home or abroad, may or may not take place in a school; following the placement the student is expected to write an assignment based on their experiences and present their findings to a seminar group.

This course enables the student to study education alongside modules from one of the partner departments; this allows development within, and comparison and contrast with, areas of the the two subjects (traditional and new and developing areas); this provides the student with an understanding of process of learning and diversity of learners, including some key paradigms and their impact on educational practices (and including their own learning), and the complex interactions between education and its contexts, and relationships with other disciplines; the student will also develop an understanding of a variety of periods in history, the limitations and capabilities of historical analysis and interpretation, and understanding of different methodologies, and the nature of knowledge in history as a subject and its curricular implications.
