The course provides specialist postgraduate training in microsystems engineering, also called micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) engineering; the coursework element is carefully structured to give a broad foundation of knowledge suitable for those students who wish to develop careers in microsystems design, manufacturing, packaging or test; this coursework has also developed industrially relevant specialisms such as MOEMS, Bio-MEMS and RF-MEMS; EngD graduates have gained an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of microsystems together with practical experience in clean-room design and a range of hardware aimed at packaging microdevices; they also have obtained an understanding of fundamental business and management issues, and how these apply in industry; importantly, because the EngD research project is carried out mostly within the sponsoring company the student gains an in-depth experience of research in a commercial environment.
