Good 2nd Class Honours degree (or overseas equivalent), and a high level of competence in written and spoken English. Other applicants with relevant experience and skills may be considered. A qualifying test may be prescribed.

This programme explores different ways in which culture is based on the construction, manipulation and transmission of memories, and the role played by memory in collective and individual identity formation; material studied ranges across film, literature, photography, art history, performing arts, material culture, oral history, anthropology, psychoanalysis, sociology; centres on the cultures of 19th- and 20th-century France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal, and other parts of the world where Germanic/Romance languages are spoken, although other cultures (e.g. the USA) are also regularly covered.
