The course is designed to develop an overview of the field of gemmology and applied mineralogy; in particular: the geological settings and evolution of gem and mineral deposits; modern analytical methods that might shed light on their evolution; and how those methods may be used to address some of the critical issues in modern-day gemmology – especially those that relate to conflict stones, treated stones and synthetic stones.
