Level 1: Semester 1 is a diagnostic period when students experience the manipulation of materials and gain process skills, providing the foundations for choosing 2 material areas from textiles, ceramics, wood or metal in which to specialise; semester 2 extends the material understanding and skill base within design projects; the use of computer-aided design (CAD) as a design tool is an integral part of the programme. Level 2: Students develop the possibilities within their practical areas, completing projects which are supported by design development, CAD and cultural and contextual studies lectures in design and professional practice; students may specialise in 1 particular area at this point. Level 3: Students develop an individually designed programme, agreed by the subject tutors and making full use of the workshop facilities, within which they demonstrate their creative flair and manufacturing capability and professionalism; final examination comprises practical work, assignments and a portfolio which includes sketch books and design drawings.

Design includes printed and constructed textiles, studio and industrial ceramics, interior and street furniture, objects for the interior, product design, silver smithing and jewellery; the course enables students to develop a visual and discerning understanding of the importance of design within a wide variety of specialist material areas relevant to individual learning, personal development and future employment; application deadline: March 2010.
