Outline syllabus: term 1: core course: general comparative study of helminth, protozoal and other vector-borne diseases and infections of medical importance, and of their vectors and intermediate hosts; special emphasis on life cycles and natural history of parasites and vectors, on epidemiology, pathology, biochemistry and immunology of parasitic diseases, on insecticides, and on selected aspects of tropical hygiene and clinical medicine; term 2: foundation course on vector-transmitted viruses and bacteria; plus 3 from 6 major options: diagnostic parasitology, biochemistry of host and parasite, vector identification and incrimination, parasite immunology, vector biology and control, applied molecular biology; term 3: theoretical biology, epidemiology, disease control; basic practical skills; term 4: research project; in-course assessment, examinations (written, practical, oral), project report.

2nd Class Honours degree of a recognised university in science, or a related subject, or a degree in medicine; applicants with an appropriate technical qualification and work experience, or equivalent qualifications, are also welcomed.

This course aims to provide core training in the theoretical and practical aspects of medical parasitology, covering the protozoan and metazoan parasites of humans and the vectors which transmit them, and equip students with specialised skills to enable them to pursue a career in research, control or teaching related to medical parasitology; specialised study modules are chosen from a list of diverse topics.
