Year 1: Deals with the basic principles of storytelling, the craft of screenwriting for film and television, and the collaborative nature of production via exercises with other departments; some shorter writing assignments; and the formal groundwork for writing industry-length material; year 2: a project-based course focusing on longer writing assignments; the final portfolio must include at least 2 full-length screenplays (feature film or television-hour), plus a short piece, which could be a short fiction or animation film or a soap or sitcom episode; specialist module designed to met student's own interests.

A degree from a British or overseas university; applicants with a relevant professional qualification or relevant industrial or practical experience are also considered; fluency in English is essential for this course; portfolio including: examples of writing such as: a screenplay or other piece of fiction plus a screenwriting sample; those shortlisted for interview may be asked to supply further evidence of writing.

Course is set in a working film and television studio and covers all aspects of screenwriting, from development of ideas through to production and post-production; screenwriting students have their writing work-shopped by professional directors and actors and have the chance to see their writing tested in production; opportunities to collaborate with directing students from fiction, documentary and animation; students are expected to produce a prolific output and to meet professional-style deadlines.
