Stage 1: Compulsory modules in each of these strands introduce students to the archaeology of Britain, from the Stone Age to the recent past; students also take modules in archaeological science, world history and key study skills, as well as visiting local sites and museums. Stage 2: Extends the geographical range of the studies to the rest of Europe and the countries around the Mediterranean, encompassing archaeological eras from prehistory to the early medieval period; plus options ranging from Bioarchaeology to the Archaeology of the Roman Empire. Stage 3: Dissertation on a subject of particular interest, with the remaining modules chosen from options within the 3 subject strands; these include: social prehistory, Rome’s Northern Frontiers and the archaeology of the Atlantic slave trade; practical options include modules on artefacts using the collections in the University’s museums.
