Foundation year (stage 0): students take just over 1/2 their modules in mathematics; mechanical sciences and applied mechanics; the remainder of the modules are assigned from a range of engineering subjects and include a project, as well as laboratory work related to the engineering programme they wish to study. Stages 1 and 2: All students take the common Stages 1 and 2; at the end of Stage 2 they can choose to spend a paid year in industry before continuing with stage 3. Stage 3: Students take modules covering various aspects of chemical engineering, including a plant design, which draws together all previous theoretical and practical knowledge.

The foundation year is broadly common for all engineering programmes and on successful completion students can progress onto one of our many MEng or BEng degree programmes; students should apply for the degree with a foundation year that is related to the particular engineering subject they wish to study.
