Stage 1: Covers all the basic scientific and quantitative aspects of the subject such as soil, crop and animal science, and economics; students are introduced to laboratory work and develop skills in microcomputing; a series of visits to the University farms covers some of the more practical aspects of agriculture. Stage 2: Students apply the principles established in stage 1 to both animal and crop production and to farm management. Stage 3: Following 1 of the 5 Honours options allows students to study in depth an area of agriculture that particularly interests them; each Honours option has a number of specific core modules with a wide range of additional choices making up 1/3 of the modules taken in the final year; students also write a dissertation.

This course enables students to defer their choice of option until Stage 2, when they choose from 1 of the following: Agronomy; animal production science; farm business management; organic food production; and rural resource management; these programmes give an in-depth understanding of agriculture at both farm and industrial levels, based on agricultural sciences, production studies and business management; while students generally gain practical farming experience before coming to Newcastle, or during University vacations, they are also introduced to a range of farming practices on the University’s and other farms.
