Stage 1: Common to all animal science students and develops an understanding of the scientific principles underpinning animal science such as physiology, genetics and behaviour; students can also learn a European language or study aspects of business or marketing. Stage 2: Topics include: animal health; nutrition and breeding; focusing on how scientific principles are applied to the husbandry of farm animals. Stage 3: The emphasis is on new developments in research in farm animals, including modules in livestock behaviour and reproduction; students work in teams to organise a mini-conference on animal health which is open to the rest of the Faculty and the general public; students arrange everything from fundraising, identifying and inviting keynote speakers to catering and even giving some of the presentations themselves; plus a research project.

This course explores many aspects of the biology of farm livestock and the technological developments that are revolutionising this sector of animal science; career prospects in food animal science are good, particularly for graduates with a sound science knowledge base and a high proficiency in communication and interpersonal skills.
