Level 1: Compulsory modules covering the basics of geographical study skills (including weekly tutorial meetings), measurement and field-based technologies, the foundations of the study of physical geography and project work. Level 2: Deepens the student’s knowledge of techniques and application areas, and (as in stage 1) involves significant amounts of fieldwork; key skills in numerical data handling and research preparation are addressed; opportunities to develop laboratory and field sampling skills are also available, along with modules in mapping and geographic information systems. Level 3: The project is intended to develop the student’s research ability further and gives the opportunity to concentrate on a topic of your choice; the project is taken along with specialist optional modules covering a range of subjects including geomorphology, Quaternary studies, geoarchaeology, offshore surveying, image measurement, information technology, fluvial studies, and climatology.

This degree course covers subjects in both geography and geomatics (the science of collecting, handling and presenting geospatial data about the Earth); a full range of modules investigating the nature of physical geography is taken, along with a significant amount of material from the discipline of geomatics; the course gives insight into themes, ideas and applications in physical geography that are grounded in the evaluation and practice of measurement, fieldwork and research skills in geomatics; the degree comprises a range of compulsory modules in stages 1 and 2, along with considerable student choice to allow for specialisation in stage 3.
