Compulsory modules typically include: Farming systems and agroecology; sustainable development and environmental change; environmental systems and modelling; quantitative techniques, experimental design and data analysis; ecological survey techniques; environment and habitat assessment field class; environmental assessment: land and water resources; optional modules may include: pesticides: uses and environmental properties; soil and water conservation; ecosystem management; geographical information systems and remote sensing; and trees: growth, management and environmental impacts; plus: MSc: research project/thesis; diploma: library based dissertation.

MSc students: 2:1 Honours degree or an international equivalent in a relevant science discipline such as: biology; zoology; environmental science; physical geography; diploma students: an appropriate professional qualification and/or experience; where 1st language is not English IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 90 (Internet-based) or 577 (paper-based); or equivalent are required; applicants with a minimum of IELTS 6.0 are accepted on condition that they successfully complete an appropriate pre-sessional English language course at the University.

The course provides an interdisciplinary training in scientific principles necessary for understanding the interactions of agriculture with the environment; emphasis on sustainability and the ecological consequences of unsound management; students develop a flexible, technical knowledge and skills base; provides an advanced interdisciplinary and holistic understanding of the scientific principles and technical skills required to analyse farming systems in relation to soils, ecology and environmental systems.
