Students take compulsory modules (60 credits) covering: rock engineering, foundation design, geomechanics, slopes and walls, research methods for engineering, investigation, testing and interpretation; optional modules (40 credits) typically including field class, groundwater assessment, engineering and applied geology, the construction business, contaminated land; and submit a dissertation (80 credits).

A 2:1 Honours degree, or international equivalent, in civil engineering or geology is preferred; other degrees are considered, as is work experience; applicants whose 1st language is not English normally require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90 (internet-based), 577 (paper-based), or equivalent.

This programme develops the skills of graduate earth scientists and allied professionals to meet the needs and requirements of the extractive industries, consultants and contractors, and other branches of civil engineering, and to satisfy the national and international demand for specialist engineering geologists with advanced training in geotechnical engineering.
