The 1-year programme includes a major research element in the form of a dissertation (60 credits); the remaining 120 credits are allocated to taught modules including: Advanced materials and processes; nanomaterials; materials and tribology; joining technology; lifetime prediction and design for reliability; manufacturing technology; corrosion and oxidation; business and environmental management; sustainable industry; the 2-year programme is designed for candidates (especially from overseas) who require extra English tuition, or need further training in certain other key background skills; students take a preparatory year comprising English language and other relevant introductory modules plus engineering modules in: materials and fabrication; integrated design; sustainable processing; and design of experiments; students then continue into the 2nd year and take the 1-year version of the programme as described above.

Minimum of a 2nd-class Honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate engineering or science subject; for the 1-year programme: applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5; TOEFL 90 (Internet-based); 577 (paper-based); or equivalent; for the 2-year programme applications from students whose English language skills are below IELTS 6.5 or equivalent are considered.

This programme is designed for applicants who have studied materials science or materials engineering as part of an undergraduate degree in science or engineering and want to pursue their studies of materials-related topics to a higher level; it is essentially a conversion course; especially appropriate for students who have a degree in physics; chemistry; or related science subjects; or in chemical engineering.
