Level 1: in the first semester, students are introduced to the animation specialism and also undertake relevant projects from two other courses including design and illustration; the second semester is focused entirely on animation and sound design. Level 2: students develop their understanding of animation, learning the skills, attitudes and approach to industry practice necessary to achieve success; the work is project and workshop-based and may include live industry briefs and opportunities for creating collaborative work with students from other courses. Level 3: the final specialist phase of the course enables students to develop creative and intellectual skills whilst making informed decisions about career pathways or the possibilities of postgraduate education; the course includes aspects of business and professional studies as well as work-related experience.

A distinctive feature of the course is the broad based level one programme, in which students will study animation alongside two complementary areas in the first semester before specialising in semester two; course encompasses two elements of study: the main focus of the course is studio practice, and this is complemented by critical studies, which, as its name implies, provides a critical and historical context for that practice.
