Level 1: Experimental theatre design projects introduce fundamental skills of creative theatre; projects begin with visual design and performance workshops and continue with introductions to construction, prop-making and scene painting techniques, lighting, costume design, fabric treatments and costume making; students develop the knowledge and skills to produce designs for potential productions in the form of scale set models, storyboards and costume and property designs; a historical, critical, cultural and social lecture series underpins practical work. Level 2: Opportunity to explore creative approaches including design for drama, opera and dance, small scale touring, contemporary playwriting and performance/devising, costume design and construction; plus commissioned work with outside companies; negotiated placement within the theatre industry; contemporary theatre and arts practice course underpins practical work. Level 3: Students undertake an area of realised work, often with an external company; project and dissertation.
