The Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University offers a non-thesis (professional) master’s degree of Materials Science (MMSNE) in two focus areas: materials science and nanoengineering. Students are expected to complete 30 semester hours of courses approved by the department (a one-semester course is usually three semester hours credit). Of these 30 hours, at least 24 must be taken at Rice. Requirements and specific courses to be taken depend on each student’s field of study. Students must have their individual degree plans and programs of study approved by their advisors. The professional master's degree program is designed for students who have shown academic excellence in their undergraduate studies, and engineering professionals who wish to delve more deeply into engineering subject matter, increase opportunities for industry advancement and enhance their technical skills. Courses include materials science and nanoengineering specializations, as well as business, management and communication disciplines. Professional development seminars and career workshops are also offered.

Houston has two airports: William P. Hobby (HOU), 11 miles to the south of campus and George Bush Intercontinental (IAH), 24 miles to the north. Intercontinental is a hub of global travel. Hobby is a hub for regional, domestic travel. Together they offer 1,000 flights a day in and out of Houston.

Most major rental car companies have locations at both airports. SuperShuttle and taxis provide ground transportation services from both airports.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, (METRO) provides bus and rail service from destinations around Houston. There is a METRORail stop across the street from the main entrance of the Rice campus. The rail line travels up and down Main Street, serving downtown, the Texas Medical Center and Reliant Park.
