Early childhood studies Year 1: This year focuses on: the study of young children and the cultural influences on their lives and development; current issues and concerns in early childhood, including a consideration of special needs and inclusion; a study of research methods which underpin the whole programme; optional modules may include: babies and toddlers; Froebel and the kindergarten; equal opportunities. Year 2: the student looks critically at the significance of play, imagination and creativity in children’s development, considers a variety of curriculum models and examines the impact of the early childhood pioneers on current perspectives and practice; optional modules may include: social work and child protection; health and well-being; the study of traveller and refugee children; the opportunity for a placement. Year 3: in the final year the student may focus on carrying out a substantial research project in a chosen area of study; optional modules may include: thinking and understanding; self and others; social policy and children’s rights; what it means to be a professional and advocate for young children; the nature of teamwork and leadership. Health studies Year 1: In the 1st year the student’s time is divided equally between physiology, psychology and sociology; there is an overall emphasis on study skills, such as establishing a clear written style for essay and report writing, developing sound arguments and improving examination technique; in the autumn term the student takes modules in introductory psychology and human physiology; the student undertakes practical investigations, observations and interviews; in the spring semester the student takes a 2nd introductory physiology module; the student also take an introductory sociology module in each semester. Year 2: in this year majoring combined Honours students must take 20 credits (1 or 2 modules) in each discipline at Honours level, although they may choose any modules to make up this total (subject to timetabling constraints); there is a wide range of module choice and a variety of assessment methods; in many modules the student is able to choose a precise area of interest for their assessed coursework assignment. Year 3: in this year there are 2 compulsory research method courses, and the student is normally required to undertake a tutored research project.

This is a combined Honours course which allows the student to study 2 subjects; the early childhood studies course is suitable for students who are interested in how young children think, learn and develop; this programme has been developed to meet the need for well-qualified early years specialists who wish to work with young children and their families; the student takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of children from birth to 6, and focuses on the knowledge and skills which underpin all professional work with young children; the health studies degree is challenging, flexible and stimulating; the student receives a grounding in the 3 major disciplines that contribute to health and healthcare (sociology, psychology and physiology) and can choose to concentrate on the field that interests them most; there are a wide range of options, which may include: ethics; psychological problems in childhood and adolescence; health promotion and complementary health studies.
