A good Honours degree from an approved university or higher education institution; register for the degree of MPhil in the first instance and apply to transfer to PhD midway through your programme; in exceptional circumstances you may be able to register directly on to the PhD programme; if this is the case you are usually expected to hold a higher degree with a significant research component in a relevant subject area, from an approved university or higher education institution.

Research covers a range of areas including language and identity, language and gender, language and ideology, World/Global Englishes, mood and modality, national and supranational identities, language policy and planning, forensic linguistics, phonetics and phonology; the unit organises regular research seminars at which both classic and more cutting edge topics are explored; students are required to participate fully in these seminars.
