Applicants are normally required to have at least a second class Honours degree or equivalent, those with non-standard qualifications, for example mature students with industrial experience and students from overseas, are also encouraged to apply; applicants are invited to attend for interview wherever possible, if unable to attend for interview, overseas applicants are normally required to take the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General test of the Educational Testing Service; candidates whose first language is not English are normally required to provide proof of proficiency in the English Language: a British Council IELTS average score of 6.5 (minimum 7 in written English), or TOEFL test score of at least 570 (230 in the computer-based test).

Develops an advanced quantitative understanding of classical physics and quantum phenomena and their application to a range of physical phenomena with particular emphasis on phenomena encountered in astrophysics and cosmology; the 1st 2 years advances mathematical ability to a level that enables understanding and application of the mathematics contained in any of the physics courses; develop experimental, computing and communication skills; the 3rd and 4th years develop a deeper understanding of astrophysics, cosmology and related physics.
