In the 1st year students study: Principles and practice of youth and community Work; the reflective and reflexive practitioner; key skills in working with people; the personal and professional in society; and counselling skills in youth and community work; students also carry out a fieldwork placement. In the 2nd year students study: Social policy and integrated services; experiential learning in groups and group work; informal and political education; equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice; professionalism and multi-organisational working; students also carry out a fieldwork placement. In the 3rd year, students study: supervision, management and organisations; professional peer presentation; research methods; students also complete a dissertation and carry out a group project.

This course is run in partnership with employers from both voluntary and statutory sectors, who will have an active involvement in teaching both in college and on fieldwork placements; it is expected that some prospective students are drawn from those currently in employment, released by their employer in order to undertake the course; others may undertake part-time or sessional work whilst undertaking the course; students combine college-based studies with 2 periods of assessed fieldwork and a group project; there are 2 continuous placements during the course; these are arranged in a variety of statutory or voluntary agencies; if students study full time they need to attend the college 2 days a week for 3 years; if you students study part time they need to attend the college once a week for 4 years.
