The course consists of seven core units and nine specialist units as follows (subject to change as required): Drawing techniques and approaches; visual communication; professional studies; historical and contextual referencing; professional practice and development; critical study (dissertation); fashion and textile materials understanding; specialist modules: experimental textiles; design exploration in fashion; fashion environment (marketing); production techniques; pattern drafting; research and development for fashion design; realising a fashion collection; pattern construction; garment manufacture.

This is a varied fashion-related programme that aspires to develop creative, practical and technically able individuals, the course aims to develop student’s critical and analytical skills to produce well-rounded graduates who are able to move smoothly and confidently into professional practice or employment or further education; work placements are integrated into the course and all students are encouraged to take part in the annual residential trips, which may include London, Paris, Barcelona, Milan or New York; students also usually have the opportunity to visit a major trade show; the annual student fashion show provides a showcase for final collections and project work; final year students also produce a static exhibition; all students are invited to submit work for consideration for the Clothes show Live at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre.
