The programme carries 120 credits, 60 at level 1 and 60 at level 2; students will study 5 core modules (2 at level 1 and 3 at level 2); they will also complete 2 option modules (1 at level 1 and 1 at level 2). Level 1 core modules: foundations in teaching in the lifelong learning and skills sector; theories and principles for planning and enabling learning and assessment. Level 1 options: equality and diversity; classroom management. Level 2 core modules: continuing personal and professional development; curriculum development for inclusive practice; wider professional practice. Level 2 options: working in teams; dealing with challenging behaviour; individual study.

Course has been designed specifically to train teachers who wish to specialise in the teaching of adult literacy or adult numeracy; the qualification has been endorsed by the standards verification UK (SVUK) as meeting the national requirements for practitioners carrying out the full teaching role; successful students will be able to use this award towards gaining a full licence to practice (GTS status); teachers completing the Cert Ed or PGCE will need to complete an additional university certificate (50 credits at level 2) to give them full professional status to teach adult literacy or numeracy; students will also complete 150 hours of teaching practice.
