Students take 3 core modules in part 1, and 3 elective modules; part 1 core modules: Historical methods and approaches; new departures in the writing of history; research folder; part 1 elective modules: the enlightenment in national contexts; political economy and the role of the state, 1762-1840; Stalin's Russia, Stalin's Russians, 1929-1953; Austria versus the Ostmark; altering images of the Welsh industrial town: Swansea, 1780-1850; popular politics and protest in Wales, 1780-1850; the making of modern sexualities, 1650-1800; globalizing the Victorians; sport and identity in Britain's Celtic 'Fringe'; Celtic borders; Celtic frontiers; empire and enlightenment: Scottish society and the making of modern Britain; from Vesuvius to Snowdon: the evolution of travel, curiosity and aesthetics; inventing traditions: the modern Celtic experience; Ireland after the famine, 1850-1925; from princely possessions to public museums: A history of collecting and display; artists and the great war, 1914-1918; the British conquest of India, 1757-1858; Swansea and the sea; the people's war: Britain, 1939-1945; collective memories of war in 20th-Century Europe; the American way of war; war and society in the 19th and 20th centuries.

This course is for students who are interested in the study of the modern period and the emergence of the characteristics of modernity from the pre-modern world; it encompasses: Welsh; British; European; and global history; it has specialisms in: economic and industrial history; questions of identity and nationality; imperialism; medicine; politics; sexuality; and sport.
