Year 1: Modules concentrate on developing their writing skills and understanding different audiences; the craft of writing looks at specific genres and the importance of context; media in the modern world outlines issues that influence the media; all media students take introduction to creative media practice and reading the media, which looks at how people interact with the media; generating ideas and meeting deadlines are practised in workshops throughout, and students also complete a writing project. Year 2: Now students can plan their next 2 years; students take the following core modules: media and cultural theory; written journalism and magazine cultures 1; students then choose 3 additional modules including: writing for stage; narration and the short story; video documentary; new media culture; learn to earn (a work-based module). Year 3: These modules enable students to hone specialist skills; students also undertake a dissertation (equivalent to 2 modules); magazine cultures 2 is the only core module; students choose another 3 modules from options including: writing for screen; video production: drama; popular music; broadcast public relations; contemporary visual culture.

New technologies mean there is a growing market for professional writing within the media; this course gives students the opportunity to develop their writing, including magazine journalism, promotional writing, script and screenwriting and web-based publishing.
