Year 1: Includes practical activities such as swimming, athletics, striking/fielding and invasion games; health and fitness is also a key topic; use of ICT, and the theory of biomechanics, physiology and skill acquisition, are studied through these activities; students study the foundations of physical education alongside 1 module of general professional studies, and spend 1 day a week at a school. Year 2: The year has a practical emphasis, enabling students to develop by gaining recognised qualifications; biomechanics, physiology, psychology, history and sociology are also studied, alongside 1 module of general professional studies, for example special educational needs; students also spend 1 day a week and a short block placement at a local school. Year 3: Students spend 2 days a week and 2 block placements in different schools; in addition, students follow 2 modules that examine ideas and issues within physical education; students also complete a small project that enables them to focus on an area of pedagogy, allowing them to apply theoretical principles within a practical setting.
