Year 1: Students study the key disciplines of linguistics and phonetics, including how to transcribe speech using the international phonetic alphabet; students also study biological sciences; in Autumn students attend a nursery 1 morning a week and complete a 2 week placement in a speech and language therapy setting. Year 2: This gives students a grounding in the assessment and diagnosis of non-complex disorders such as motor speech difficulties; 1 day a week is spent on placement in an educational setting, and students undertake a block work placement with sufferers of speech and language difficulties. Year 3: At the start of the year students spend 1 day a week in a clinic and finish the year with a block placement; students also study disorders such as specific language impairment in children; guest speakers talk about communication disorders and speech and language therapy (SLT); students complete a final year project based on a subject area of their choice.
