The programme has been developed collaboratively and is for managers and practitioners across a range of social professional settings, in the statutory, voluntary and community sectors; a degree or equivalent plus professional qualification (e.g. DipSW, JNC, teaching) and/or possess a minimum of 2 years related work experience; non-standard entrance criteria (such as Diploma in Counselling, Personal Advisor Diploma, etc as highest qualification) and APEL arrangements are also in place.

This programme enables the development of theory alongside practice, an opportunity not always available within pressured working contexts; furthermore, it is offered within a distinct perspective, one that considers the impact of social inequalities as central to our understanding of emotional well being; this course is rooted in the Social Action approach, a broad term that considers “the socio-political context of mental health, the operation of power, and the interaction between social structure and individual agency” (Miller & McLelland 2006).
