Emphasis is on independent study, individuality and intellectual achievement appropriate for the student preparing to enter their chosen profession; the entire course is divided into 3 areas: studio practice; contextual studies; professional practice; the student undertakes modules which include the following: studio practice 3: the student chooses their area of interest and undertakes preliminary investigations into their chosen topic from which they may investigate and develop a range of prototypes; context 3 dissertation: this involves a written exploration of the student’s chosen subject area relevant to the production of a major project outcome; professional practice 3: here the student takes their prototypes and research that they developed in studio practice 3 and brings them to a logical and creative conclusion in the form of a major finished outcome; professional practice 3 special studies: the outcome here is a technical report and evaluation that explores the student’s progress and the related technologies and methodologies used; the year is 1 of research, discovery, exploration and conclusion; the studio project follows practical experiments that explore, test and innovate in chosen subject areas; it is intended to encourage the student to explore their chosen final projects in conjunction with industry agencies or practitioners; throughout, the principal concern is for the learning to encompass individual development, intellectual and creative challenge and the development of a professional capability.

The worlds of art, design and new media are beginning to develop increasingly creative uses for new digital technologies; building upon the existing Foundation degrees in multimedia (design) and multimedia (games art) at the University Centre, this degree is intended to provide the student with an additional year of research and investigation to mature and develop their area of practice within games art, contemporary arts practice and multimedia design to a higher professional level; the aim is to harness the ethos inherent in the Foundation degree through continued industrial involvement, via client based learning; through the this course, the student gains valuable practical, theoretical and vocational experience in the application of digital art technologies toward a range of exciting and creative outcomes; the student utilises web applications, moving image, digital drawing and modelling, digital animation and motion graphics for both the commercial and non-commercial creative industries; the overall aim of the course is to produce graduates capable of adopting a role within the area of digital arts practice; the student’s aspirations are developed by encouraging an understanding of technologies, creative thinking and its applications.
