Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary field involving chemistry, math, the physical sciences, and biology. Biochemists use chemistry and the physical sciences as tools to examine and explore the molecular processes of life. The questions that biochemists address encompass many critical challenges facing humans today, particularly in areas related to the medical sciences, agriculture, and environmental science. Students earning a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry complete a year-long senior research project in the laboratory of a faculty member, culminating in a senior research thesis. Students earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry complete a one semester literature-based writing project under the guidance of a faculty member. Students with a biochemistry degree are well-positioned to pursue careers in medicine, biochemical and pharmaceutical research, industrial research, public health, and law.
